While tipping is generally uncommon in China, a notable exception is found in the tradition of Wu Opera.
Wu Opera
Wu Opera, also known as 婺剧 (Wuju), is a traditional Chinese opera form that originated in the Wuzhou area of Zhejiang Province, China. It’s one of the older forms of Chinese opera, with a history that dates back over 400 years. Wu Opera is renowned for its simple and elegant style, distinctive for its lyrical and melodious music, as well as its graceful and refined performances.
Tipping in Wu Opera
Wu Opera has a unique and generous tipping culture. Historically, appreciative audiences would offer gifts such as rice, fruits, and wine to the performers as a token of their admiration and support. This tradition has evolved over time, and nowadays, it’s more common for the audience to give cash tips. What’s particularly interesting is the manner of giving these tips: audience members often go directly onto the stage after the performance to hand over their contributions. This direct interaction is a significant aspect of Wu Opera’s cultural tradition, reflecting a deep connection and respect between the performers and their audience.
The Legend of the White Snake in Wu Opera
The Legend of the White Snake is a classic Chinese folktale about a love affair between a human, Xu Xian, and a thousand-year-old white snake spirit, Bai Suzhen, who transforms into a woman. In Wu Opera, the adaptation of the Legend of the White Snake often includes dramatic portrayals of scenes set on the Broken Bridge
Where to Watch a Wu Opera?
Theatres in Zhejiang Province: The most authentic Wu Opera performances can be found in its birthplace, Zhejiang Province. Cities like Jinhua, the cultural center of Wu Opera, regularly host performances. The local opera houses are the best place to watch a Wu Opera. As they are not usually tailored for international audience, there will not be any English subtitles. It’s worth nothing that even young generations rarely watch Wu Opera.
