Best time to visit China by region: a month-by-month comparison
China has no single best season, because the plum rains, the typhoon months, the plateau monsoon and the national holiday weeks all fall at different times. Choose the region first, then the month follows.
| Region | Go | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yangtze Delta (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou) | Before 19 June, or after 9 July | Mid-June to mid-July | Plum-rain season averages 19 June to 9 July — about 21 days of continuous damp heat. |
| South coast and Hainan (Guangzhou, Xiamen, Sanya) | November to April | July to September | From 1949 to 2019, 78% of typhoon landfalls in China came in July, August and September. |
| Tibet (Lhasa, Shigatse) | March to October; April and October for dry roads | — | The wet season runs May to September and carries about 90% of the annual precipitation. |
| Harbin and the northeast | January to February | — | The Ice and Snow Festival opened on 5 January 2026 at Harbin Ice-Snow World. |
| Anywhere in the country | — | 15–23 February and 1–7 October 2026 | Nine-day Spring Festival holiday and seven-day National Day holiday. |
Holidays land on every region at once
Spring Festival 2026 runs 15–23 February, nine days off. National Day runs 1–7 October, seven days. Mid-Autumn is 25–27 September and Labour Day 1–5 May. Two Saturdays either side of Spring Festival — 14 and 28 February — plus 20 September and 10 October are designated working days, which squeezes the same number of trips into fewer dates.
If school holidays or leave fix your dates, book early and take a flexible rate. Compare all the main booking sites before you commit, because the same room is priced differently on each.

The plateau and the far north have hard seasons
Tibet's dry season is October to April; the wet season from May to September carries roughly 90% of the year's rain. Lhasa's rain falls mainly in July, August and September but comes mostly at night, which is why summer is still the region's own favourite — March to October is the recommended window, and June to September the best of it. For dry roads towards Everest Base Camp or Namtso, aim for April or October and accept cold nights.
Harbin is the reverse. The 42nd Ice and Snow Festival opened on 5 January 2026 at Harbin Ice-Snow World, and the sculptures last only as long as the temperature does.
