10 Shops Near Chen Clan Academy Worth Going Back To
Ten small places around Chen Clan Academy that locals keep returning to — chicken rice, congee, offal soup and dessert, most of it under 15 yuan a head.
- 吉祥巷鸡饭 (Jixiang Lane Chicken Rice) — Order the claypot soup and the chicken rice. Regulars say the chicken rice is the reason to come; it is the standout of the two.
- 裕记粥档 (Yu Kee Congee Stall) — A proper street-side operation with real bustle. If you like dry-steamed dishes (干蒸), this is the one to go for. Regulars report it rarely misses.
- 明日商店 (Tomorrow Shop) — Small inside, but easy to spend time in. Heavy on dog toys — corgis, golden retrievers, border collies, the lot.
- 顽聚士多店 (Hey Joy Store) — Shelves of miniature household objects — a tiny supermarket of them. Locals treat it as a childhood-nostalgia stop.
- 锦熊鸡杂汤 (Jin Xiong Chicken Offal Soup) — Roughly 12 yuan per person. Clean, savoury broth; a cheap, good bowl.
- 芳记小食 (Fang Ji Snacks) — Traditional hand-made rice noodle rolls (布拉肠). The fried dough roll (炸鬼肠) is on every table. Mixed pork and offal congee (鸳鸯肠粥) is 12 yuan, and the price board runs from 6 yuan for plain rice roll up to about 12.5 yuan for the pork-liver and kidney rolls. Congees sit mostly between 11.5 and 12.5 yuan, with plain congee at 3 yuan. Bring your own box or bowl if you want to save: containers are 1 yuan and 0.5 yuan respectively.
- 英姐鲜奶 (Ying Jie Fresh Milk) — Tucked away, about 10 yuan per person. Everything is made by hand and you can choose your sweetness. The cold-tapped coconut milk with sago is 6.5 yuan. They also do fresh yoghurt, sugar-free yoghurt and turtle jelly, all milk-based.
- 荔園奶茶 (Lychee Garden Milk Tea) — Around 15 yuan per person. Proper Hong Kong milk tea: strong, slightly astringent, and smooth going down. Also Ceylon lemon tea, silk-stocking milk tea and black-and-white yuen yeung.
- 喜糖甜品 (Xi Tang Dessert) — A cramped little shop with every seat taken. Prices are friendly and the desserts are good. Doubles as a cha chaan teng and ice room.
- 兰芳园甜品 (Lan Fang Yuan Dessert) — Generous portions. The durian is fresh and genuinely good rather than flavoured. Signature durian sweet soup is 15 yuan (cold or hot), with variants at 18 yuan for red bean, lotus seed, taro or corn, and 20 yuan for mango. They also do double-skin milk from 11 yuan and ginger milk curd.
The whole cluster sits in Liwan, around and behind Chen Clan Academy station on Line 1 — stay anywhere within a couple of stops and all ten are walkable.
