DiDi in China without a Chinese phone number
Yes. You can hail a DiDi in mainland China with your own foreign mobile number — no Chinese SIM, no Chinese bank account, no Chinese ID. DiDi's mainland app has an English interface, supports global number login, translates in-app messages, and accepts international bank cards. The Ministry of Commerce guide for foreign business visitors states it in one line: the DiDi-Greater China app supports foreign mobile phone numbers and international credit cards at registration.
The catch is that "works" is not the same as "works smoothly on the first try after a nine-hour flight." Set it up before you leave.
Setting it up
- Install the mainland app before you fly. You want "DiDi: China Ride Hailing," not DiDi Rider, which serves other countries. Choose Chinese Mainland as your region and allow location access.
- Register with your own number, country code first. You need to receive one verification SMS. A data-only China eSIM has no number to receive texts on, so register at home while your normal SIM is active, or keep that SIM on roaming until the code lands. If it never arrives, the DiDi mini-program inside Alipay or WeChat signs you in through the account you are already using.
- Switch to English and set up payment. Me → Wallet → Payment Methods. International cards are supported on paper; app-store reviews from foreigners regularly report Visa and Mastercard binding being rejected on issuer risk checks. The more reliable route is to link your card to Alipay or WeChat Pay first, then choose that wallet as your DiDi payment method. Cash will not help: Beijing's municipal transport guidance states plainly that DiDi does not support cash payments.
- Enter the destination, then check the pickup pin. Search works in English or pinyin. Before confirming, drag the pin to where you are actually standing — the nearest road on the map is often across a barrier. At airports and railway stations, walk to the signed online ride-hailing pickup zone first, then order.
- Board, then pay. Match the number plate. The driver will want the last four digits of your registered number, which is the confirmation code DiDi displays. The fare is charged automatically at the end of the trip; cancelling within five minutes of requesting is free, and a fee applies after that.
If the app will not cooperate
Two fallbacks work with foreign numbers. In Alipay: Transport → Taxi. In WeChat: Me → Services → Travel Service or DiDi Ride-Hailing. Amap, Alibaba's map app, also added ride-hailing to its English-language Amap Global app, with one-tap sign-in for mobile numbers from 65 countries and regions, paid through Alipay or WeChat Pay.
