Where to Stay in Dunhuang: City Center vs Desert Edge
Dunhuang has two places worth basing yourself: the city center around Shazhou Night Market, or the desert edge near Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake. Both work — they just suit different trips.
City Center / Shazhou Night Market Area
For a first visit, this is the simpler default. Most travelers prefer downtown for better accommodation choices; it puts you within 30 minutes of the airport and railway station by car, and the Shazhou Night Market is right on your doorstep. It also keeps logistics clean on split days — you can return between a museum visit and a later desert outing without carrying everything with you.
The Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center — the mandatory starting point for any cave visit — is about 10 km from the city center. Taxis from the center to the Exhibition Center cost around ¥30–¥50 and take fifteen to twenty minutes.
The typical price for a 3-star hotel in Dunhuang is around USD 72 per night; a 4-star property averages around USD 80. Few international chain hotels operate in the city, though branded options like Four Points by Sheraton and Atour have appeared in central Dunhuang. Budget travelers cluster around the city center, where affordable hostels double as social hubs.

Mingsha Mountain / Crescent Lake Area
Near Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring is the most atmospheric choice, ideal if you want desert views, sunset photography, camel riding, and a stronger Silk Road feeling. The trade-off is practical: accommodation here is generally not as good as downtown hotels, though there are plenty of choices including economical hostels in Mingshan Village.
The standout option in this zone is The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel, about 1.5 km from the scenic area on Dunyue Road, which is the nicest and best-equipped property in this part of town. Rooms with a sand dune view are spacious and nicely decorated, and the rooftop restaurant has some of the best views in the area. Rates run roughly USD 67–111 per night, depending on season and room type. It sits about 15 km from Dunhuang Mogao International Airport and 13 km from Dunhuang Railway Station.
Desert camp stays — tented accommodation right on the dunes — are a third option for one-night experiences. Basic camping tents start from around ¥100 per night, with more comfortable glamping options considerably higher.
Which to Choose
| Area | Best for | Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| City center / Shazhou Night Market | First visits, food, logistics, budget range | No desert scenery; farther from Mingsha Mountain |
| Mingsha Mountain / Crescent Lake | Atmosphere, sunset access, longer stays | Fewer restaurant options; less convenient for Mogao |
| Desert camps | One-night experience, families with children | Basic facilities; not suited to full itineraries |
Book early for spring, autumn, Chinese public holidays, and summer family travel periods. Boutique and high-end rooms are more limited in Dunhuang than in major Chinese cities.
