Where to stay in Guangzhou: Tianhe, Yuexiu or Liwan?

Stay in Tianhe or Zhujiang New Town for a first trip, in Yuexiu if you want the old-city sights within walking distance, in Liwan for food and pre-war Cantonese streets, and in Pazhou only if you are going to the Canton Fair. Guangzhou is large enough that the district you pick decides how much of each day goes to travelling rather than looking at things.

Choose the metro station before the hotel. Two addresses a kilometre apart can be twenty minutes apart in practice, and the district name alone tells you almost nothing about the walk to a train.

Why Tianhe wins for most first trips

Zhujiang New Town puts Huacheng Square, the opera house and the Guangdong Museum within a walk of each other, with Canton Tower across the river. You pay for that convenience, and the streets feel like a financial district rather than a city with a thousand years behind it. If you want the food and the shophouses, you will be taking the metro west every evening.

Liwan rewards slower trips

Xiguan, Yongqing Fang and Shamian sit close together, with morning tea rooms and noodle shops on the surrounding blocks. It suits a second visit, or a first visit where eating matters more than ticking off monuments. Shamian itself is the calmest place to sleep in the city, at the cost of crossing a footbridge to reach the train.

Pazhou and the Canton Fair

The 140th Canton Fair runs from 15 October to 4 November 2026 in three phases, the first from 15 to 19 October, the second from 23 to 27 October and the third from 31 October to 4 November. If your dates overlap, decide where you are sleeping before anything else.

Arriving at Baiyun airport

Metro Line 3's north extension serves both terminals: Airport North for Terminal 2, Airport South for Terminal 1. Trains reach Guangzhou East Railway Station or Tiyu Xilu in about 35 to 40 minutes for seven to eight yuan, running from 6am to 11:15pm every five to 10 minutes. A hotel near either of those stations makes an early arrival or a late departure simple.

Pin the station first, then compare the main booking sites in one search and filter by distance from it: compare all.
