Where to stay in Guilin: city, Yangshuo or Yulong River
Split the trip: one night in Guilin city, then two or three in Yangshuo or along the Yulong River. Guilin is the transport hub — airport, high-speed rail, the big hotels — but the karst scenery sits 65 km south, and every day you base in the city and travel down costs two to three hours.
Rates below are what to expect outside the peak weeks; they roughly double around Golden Week and the Chinese school holidays.
| Area | Typical rate (CNY) | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guilin city centre, Xiufeng district | 180–320 | First or last night, walking to Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas | No peaks out the window; pedestrian-street noise until about 23:00 |
| Yangshuo, edge of West Street | 220–400 | Restaurants, raft and e-bike hire, English menus | Bar noise in the West Street core runs to about 2am |
| Yulong River and Shili Gallery | 300–600 | Karst views from the room; cycling and quiet mornings | 8–12 km from town, so you need an e-bike or taxi |
| Longji, Ping'an or Dazhai | 250–430 | Sunrise and sunset over the terraces | 2–2.5 hours from Guilin each way |
Guilin city centre: one night, no more
Stay in Xiufeng, around Zhengyang Pedestrian Street and the Two Rivers and Four Lakes. Elephant Trunk Hill, the pagodas and the river promenade are all inside a 15-minute walk. The airport is 28 km southwest; the shuttle is ¥20 and takes about 50 minutes, a taxi ¥80–90. Ask for a room facing away from the pedestrian street.
Yangshuo town: convenient, and loud
A high-speed train from Guilin North reaches Yangshuo station in about 30 minutes for ¥30–50, then it is a 10–15 minute taxi to West Street. Rooms on the edge of West Street put everything on your doorstep. Rooms in the middle of it are cheap and stay loud until about 2am, and most of the old buildings have no lift — worth knowing with luggage or children.
Yulong River and Shili Gallery: the view
This is where you wake up to peaks. Guesthouses sit 8–12 km from West Street, so budget for an e-bike at ¥30–60 a day or a taxi into town. Ask whether your specific room looks straight at the karst — listing photos show the property's best angle, not necessarily yours.
Longji rice terraces: only if you sleep up there
Ping'an is about 2 hours' drive from Guilin, Dazhai 2–2.5 hours, and the ¥80 entrance ticket covers three days. A day trip means arriving in flat midday light and leaving before the good hour. Ping'an guesthouses run roughly ¥250–430, Dazhai ¥250–290.
For a town with this many small, family-run properties, rates move daily and the same room can differ by a third between platforms. Compare the main booking sites before you commit, and filter for free cancellation while you weigh up Yangshuo against the countryside.

Guilin airport to the city centre: shuttle bus, taxi or DiDi
