Hong Kong to mainland China: pick the right border crossing

You can cross from Hong Kong into mainland China on foot, by train, by coach or by ferry, and the crossing itself usually takes well under an hour. What decides your route is where you are going in Shenzhen, what time you are travelling, and whether you hold a passport that can enter China without a visa this year.

The crossings, and their hours

The East Rail runs from Admiralty to Lo Wu in about 45 minutes. Hong Kong and mainland immigration are both handled inside West Kowloon station, so build in extra time there.

How to cross

1. Match the port to your destination and your timing, then check the hours again — Futian shuts at 22:30 even though the trains feel like they run all evening.
2. Confirm your entry status before you book anything. Crossing a foot border and arriving at an airport are not the same thing for visa purposes.
3. For the high-speed rail, tickets are passport-linked; buy from 12306 or at the station. For the East Rail you need no advance ticket — Octopus or a contactless card is enough.
4. Foreign nationals can now complete the arrival card digitally before travelling, from the National Immigration Administration site, the NIA 12367 app, or its WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. Paper forms are still available at the port.
5. You clear Hong Kong exit first, then mainland entry. The fast e-lanes are for mainland permit holders and Hong Kong and Macao Home Return Permit holders, not foreign passports, so queue at a counter.
6. Sort payment and maps before you cross. Alipay or WeChat Pay and a working map app save a lot of friction, and Google services do not work on the mainland.

Who needs a visa

China's unilateral visa-free list covers ordinary passports from 50 countries for stays of up to 30 days, for tourism, business, transit and family visits. The policy runs to 31 December 2026, with Russia covered to 31 December 2027; the UK and Canada were added from 17 February 2026. The United States is not on that list.

US passport holders and other nationalities outside the list can use the 240-hour transit exemption if they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. Citizens of 55 countries qualify, entering through 65 designated ports. In Guangdong these include Shenzhen Bao'an airport, Shekou passenger port, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge port and the West Kowloon high-speed rail port, which was added on 5 November 2025. The stay area is Guangdong Province. Luohu, Futian, Huanggang and Shenzhen Bay are not on the published port list, so plan to enter by air, ferry or high-speed rail if this is your route.

Everyone else needs a visa issued before travel; there is no tourist visa counter at the border. Travel insurance deserves the same check, because many policies sold in Hong Kong treat the mainland as a separate territory from the city.
