How many days do you need in Changsha?
Two days covers the essentials. Three is the honest answer if you also want the Hunan Museum, because it is free, closed on Mondays, and its tickets are released only five days ahead — a single missed drop can wreck a two-day plan.
| Days | What actually fits | When it is the right call |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Orange Isle and Yuelu Mountain with Yuelu Academy, then food streets after dark. The museum is not realistic. | A layover or a stop en route to Zhangjiajie. |
| 2 | The same spread over two days, plus the Hunan Museum and the Wuyi Square, Pozi Street and Taiping Old Street cluster. | Minimum for a first visit that includes Mawangdui. |
| 3 | All of the above at walking pace, with an evening on the Xiang River and the older streets around Chaozong and Kaifu Temple. | You want slack for the museum ticket drop, or a rest afternoon in July heat. |
| 4–5 | Add Shaoshan, or leave the city for Fenghuang or Zhangjiajie. | You are building a Hunan trip, not a Changsha one. |
Book these before you arrive
- Hunan Museum — free, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:00, closed Mondays except statutory holidays. Reserve on the official WeChat account or the Alipay mini-program, up to five days ahead; each day's tickets are released at 20:00. Non-mainland visitors book and enter on a passport. Weekend and holiday slots are the hardest.
- Yuelu Mountain — free entry but real-name reservation, through the "Yuelu Mountain Orange Isle Tourist Area" mini-program, up to three days ahead, in slots of 06:00–12:00, 12:00–17:00 and 17:00–22:00. South gate: Metro Line 4 to Hunan University, exit 2, then about nine minutes on foot.
- Yuelu Academy — ¥40 and a separate booking on its own WeChat account. Cable car (east gate only): ¥50 up, ¥40 down, ¥80 return. Shuttle bus: ¥20 one way, ¥30 return.
- Orange Isle — free, reserved separately on the same account, open 07:00–22:00, via Metro Line 2 to Juzizhou·Qinglian. The island runs about six kilometres; the sightseeing train is ¥40 return, and walking one way takes over an hour.
Getting in and around
From Huanghua Airport the maglev reaches Changsha South in roughly 20 minutes for ¥20, running about 07:00–22:30 and extended to 23:00 at the airport on weekends and holidays. Metro Line 6 goes straight to Wuyi Square in about 45 minutes. For the museum, Line 6 to Xiangya Hospital is the nearest stop.
Where to stay
Wuyi Square is the default: Line 2 runs from there to both Orange Isle and Changsha South, and the main food streets are walkable. If you are only passing through, a hotel at Changsha South removes a long metro ride from your morning. Rates swing hard with the calendar, so compare all the main booking sites before you commit.

If you have a fourth day
Shaoshan, Mao Zedong's birthplace, is 23 minutes from Changsha South by high-speed train. Heading west instead, Fenghuang Gucheng is about two hours away and Zhangjiajie West about three, with second-class seats around ¥305–320.

Where to Stay in Changsha: 4 Areas, Honestly Compared
Changsha's best areas to stay depend entirely on what you're there for. Most visitors belong in the Wuyi Square core; here's how the other options compare.
Changsha airport to the city centre: metro, maglev or taxi
Metro Line 6 runs from the basement of Huanghua airport's T1/T2 to central Changsha for about ¥6. The maglev only makes sense if you are connecting at Changsha South — and the taxi meter changes at 22:00.
