How many days in Chongqing? Three, plus a day trip
Three days is the right answer for a first visit: two days cover central Chongqing, and the third buys you one day trip. Two days is a sprint that skips the day trip entirely. Four or five days let you do both the Dazu Rock Carvings and the Wulong Karst without rushing either.
Chongqing is vertical, so budget time for that. Stops that sit 2 km apart on a map can involve a staircase and an escalator between two street levels, and a five-stop day here delivers roughly what a seven-stop day delivers in a flat city.
| Days | What fits | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Jiefangbei, Hongyadong at night, the Liziba monorail, the Yangtze River Cableway, Ciqikou old town | Both day trips, and any slack for rain or heat |
| 3 | All of the above at a walkable pace, plus Dazu or Wulong | The day trip you did not pick |
| 4–5 | Both day trips, plus Eling Park, the Three Gorges Museum and a two-rivers night cruise | Nothing much — this is the comfortable version |
One city-side number worth knowing: the Yangtze River Cableway costs ¥30 one way and ¥50 return, and runs 08:00–22:00 from 1 March to 30 November and 08:00–21:00 the rest of the year. Queues build after 10:00.
What the two day trips cost
Dazu Rock Carvings, about 100 km west of the centre, for the history. Baodingshan entry is ¥115 in peak season, March–November, and ¥100 from December to February; the Baodingshan-plus-Beishan combo is ¥140 in peak season. Allow three to five hours on site.
Wulong Karst, roughly 190 km southeast, for the landscape. The Three Natural Bridges ticket is ¥155 from March to October and ¥125 from November, and includes the shuttle bus and the glass elevator. High-speed trains run from Chongqing East to Wulong South in 35–52 minutes for around ¥82–89 in second class, then a 45-minute shuttle reaches the visitor centre. The gorge loop takes three to four hours.
Book the train and the hotel together before you commit to a Wulong day trip; the early Chongqing East departures are the ones that sell out. It is worth comparing the main booking sites rather than taking the first price you see.

If you are on the visa-free clock
Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is an eligible port for China's 240-hour visa-free transit, open to citizens of 50-odd countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea, provided you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country. The 240 hours begin at midnight on the day after you enter, so a four- or five-day Chongqing stop still leaves room to travel on. Many European passports do not need the transit route at all: China's unilateral visa exemption gives 30 days and currently runs to 31 December 2026. The eligible-country list has been expanded several times, so check your own nationality against the National Immigration Administration's current version before booking flights.
