How many days in Dunhuang? Two minimum, three for the desert
Two full days is the minimum, and it is not a generous minimum: one day for the Mogao Caves, one for Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake. Three days is the honest answer if you want the western Silk Road sites, because Yumen Pass, Yangguan and Yardang National Geopark sit on a road that takes 2.5 hours to drive before you reach the last of them.
Two days: Mogao and Mingsha
The A ticket to the Mogao Caves costs 238 CNY in peak season (1 April–30 November) and includes two films at the digital display centre, eight caves, a guide and the shuttle between them. There are 6,000 A tickets a day, sold through the official Mogao Caves Visit Reservation WeChat mini program and released 30 days ahead; there is no ticket window on site. If they are gone, the B ticket is 100 CNY for four caves and no film, and it is still worth taking. From 1 December to 31 March the standard ticket drops to 140 CNY and opens ten caves instead of eight. Allow three to four hours.
Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake costs 110 CNY in peak season and is also online-only. Book with your passport number on the official WeChat account or a platform such as Trip.com. The ticket is valid for three consecutive days and entry is by face recognition, so the efficient play is sunset on one day and sunrise on the next. Winter hours from 10 October 2026 run 06:30–18:30. Do not put Mogao and Mingsha in the same day; you will spend the second half of it exhausted.
A third day: the western line
Yumen Pass (40 CNY, plus a 50 CNY shuttle), Yangguan (50 CNY, plus a 10 CNY shuttle) and Yardang National Geopark (120 CNY including the shuttle, April–October) are strung along one road. A shared car or one-day tour runs about 200 CNY a person; a private car is 400–600 CNY a day. Expect an 08:00 departure and a 22:00 return. Add the Western Thousand Buddha Caves (30 CNY) if you still have appetite for painted caves.
A fourth day, and where to base yourself
Four days buys you the night market, the museum and slower mornings rather than a new site. Dunhuang Mogao International Airport is 12.7 km from the city centre and the railway station about 12 km. When booking train tickets, make the destination Dunhuang Station, not Liuyuan — Liuyuan is 128 km away and a two-hour transfer. From Lanzhou there are 2–6 direct flights daily at about 1 hour 50 minutes, or trains taking 8.5 to 14.5 hours; from Xining the bullet train takes about 6 hours.
Most visitors base themselves near Shazhou Night Market, a short walk from the Mingsha gate and the food stalls. Room rates swing hard in peak season.
