How many days do you need in Guangzhou?

Three days covers Guangzhou properly; two is workable if you are fitting it around another city, and four to five lets you add Baiyun Mountain, a day trip and a second slow afternoon in the old town. The city is not short of sights, but most of them sit close together along the Pearl River, so what stretches a visit is eating and hill-walking rather than distance.

3The above plus Baiyun Mountain, or a full day eating through Liwan and XiguanMost first-time visitors
4–5Adds a day trip (Foshan, or Shenzhen and Hong Kong by high-speed rail) and a museum afternoonAnyone with no onward city booked in a hurry

Opening hours that shape the plan

Chen Clan Academy charges ¥10 and runs 9:00–17:30 with last entry at 17:00, and it closes on Tuesdays — the one booking constraint worth planning around. It is five minutes from Exit D of Chen Clan Academy station on Line 1 or Line 8, and an hour is enough.

Canton Tower opens 9:30–22:30. The 433-metre indoor decks cost ¥150; the 450-metre outdoor platform is ¥228; ¥298 adds the rooftop Ferris wheel. Go up an hour before sunset and you get the daylight view and the lights for one ticket.

Baiyun Mountain is ¥5 to enter, with the cable car ¥25 up and ¥20 down. Budget half a day, more if you walk it.

Where to base yourself

Stay near a Line 1 or Line 3 station rather than chasing a specific neighbourhood. Line 3 runs from Baiyun Airport to Tiyu Xilu in about 45 minutes, and Line 1 links the old town, the academy and the riverfront in a straight line.

Hotels near Tiyu Xilu and Zhujiang New Town are the convenient default, but rates jump during the Canton Fair — check dates before you fix a budget.

How long you are allowed to stay

Under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, which has been in force since 17 December 2024, travellers from 55 eligible countries can enter through listed ports including Guangzhou Baiyun and stay up to ten days. Eligibility is nationality-specific, so check your own passport against the current list rather than assuming.
