How many days in Huangshan? Two, with a night on the summit
Two days, including one night on the summit, is the number to plan for. A single day is possible but you spend it queueing and watching the clock; a third day lets you add Hongcun or Xidi at the foot of the mountain without rushing the mountain itself.
| Days | What it covers | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Cable car up, the main ridge trail, the Welcoming Pine, cable car down | Sunrise and sunset, the West Sea Grand Canyon, any slack for queues |
| 2 days, 1 night on the summit | Back mountain up, sunset, sunrise, West Sea Grand Canyon rim, front mountain down | Nothing essential — this is the standard route |
| 3 days, 2 nights | The two days above at an easier pace, plus Hongcun or Xidi | One more night's cost and one more day of your trip |
The mountain is not the bottleneck — getting to it is
The bus from Huangshan North Station to Tangkou, the south gate transfer town, costs 30 yuan and runs from 06:55 to 19:00. Private cars stop at Tangkou; from there a park shuttle takes you up to the cable car stations for 19 yuan one way.
Entry is 190 yuan between 21 January and 19 December, and 150 yuan from 20 December to 20 January. The ticket covers three consecutive days from the first scan, with unlimited re-entry, so a summit night costs nothing extra at the gate. Hongcun is a separate ticket: 104 yuan at the gate, around 94 yuan booked online, also valid three days.
Cable cars are charged one way: Yungu 80, Taiping 80, Yuping 90, and the West Sea Grand Canyon rail 100. The usual two-day route rides Yungu up the back mountain and Yuping down past the Welcoming Pine, so budget 170 yuan in lifts on top of the ticket.
Book before you travel, not at the gate
The park runs real-name, timed, direction-specific reservations, and visitors without one are turned away. Opening hours from 5 March to 30 November are 7:00–17:10 on weekdays and 6:30–17:40 at weekends; from 1 December to 4 March it is 8:00–16:40 daily. Uphill entry at the hiking checkpoints closes at 15:00, and the cable cars stop with the park, so an afternoon arrival burns a day.
Summit beds — Beihai, Baiyun, Paiyun, the Bright Summit lodge — are the other constraint, and they sell out months ahead for October weekends. Compare the main booking sites before you fix your dates.

The third day is best spent in the West Sea Grand Canyon, the section most two-day visitors only see from the rim. Walking down and looping back up takes most of a day.
