How many days in Chengdu? Three is the floor, four is comfortable
Three days is the floor for Chengdu, four is comfortable, five lets you add one day trip, and two means cutting something you came for.
| Days | What actually fits | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Panda Base morning, one old street, one dinner | Chengdu is a stop on a longer route |
| 3 | Pandas, one full culture day, one food and opera evening | First visit, normal pace |
| 4 | Plus a slow day: People's Park teahouse, Wenshu Monastery, a museum | You want time to sit down |
| 5 | Plus one day trip — Leshan, Dujiangyan or Sanxingdui | You will add one excursion, not two |
Seven days only makes sense if you are heading on to Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong. Those involve long transfers, altitude and weather risk, and are not day trips from the city.
The panda morning sets your first day
Chengdu Research Base tickets are 55 yuan for adults and 27 for students, booked online under your real name up to 14 days ahead, against a daily cap of 85,000. From March to October the morning entry window is 7:30–12:00 and the afternoon window is 12:00–17:00; from November to February it is 8:00–12:00 and 12:00–16:30. Pandas are active early and are brought indoors when it gets hot, so this is a morning, not a day. Chinese ID holders swipe through a turnstile; on a foreign passport you use the staffed passport lane, and the base names Trip.com or the on-site cash-and-cards window as the way to book without a Chinese phone number.
For the afternoon, pick one of Wenshu Monastery, Wuhou Shrine with Jinli next door, or People's Park with the Heming teahouse. Not all three.
Each day trip costs a full day
Leshan Giant Buddha: Chengdu East to Leshan takes as little as 41 minutes, with second-class seats from 27 yuan. Dujiangyan is 18 to 62 minutes by intercity train, second class 10 to 27 yuan. Do not bolt Mount Emei onto Leshan on the same day; it turns a good day into a rushed one.
Where you sleep decides how many days you actually get
Stay inside the Second Ring Road on metro Line 1, 2 or 3. Line 3 reaches Panda Avenue station, where shuttle 408 runs to the panda base, and a base around Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li keeps dinner within walking distance.
Book hotels, flights & trains across China — all in one place
Rates in Chengdu swing hard around public holidays, so it is worth comparing the main booking sites before you commit to a room.
Arrival day
Metro Line 18 from Tianfu International Airport to Chengdu South Railway Station is 10 yuan and about 50 minutes; continuing to Tianfu Square on Line 1 takes roughly 75 minutes and 11 yuan. Count arrival as half a day lost, not as a sightseeing day.
