How many days do you need in Kunming?
Two full days minimum, three if you want the Stone Forest without rushing, one only if Kunming is a stop between a flight and a train.
What each extra day buys you
- One day. Green Lake park and the old streets around it, then a lakeside walk at Haigeng Dam on Dianchi. Skip the Stone Forest — the return trip plus the walking inside the park uses the whole day.
- Two days. City on day one, Stone Forest on day two, back in time for dinner.
- Three days. Add the Western Hills above Dianchi and the Dragon Gate grottoes, which is a half day if you climb rather than take the cable car.
Green Lake is free and the easiest place to spend a morning: locals dance and play cards on the causeways, and from November to March red-billed gulls crowd the water and take food from your hand. The Yunnan Provincial Museum is free and closed Mondays. Both sit within walking distance of the university district, which is where the cheap noodle shops are.
The Stone Forest day
High-speed trains run from Kunming South to Shilin West in about 20–30 minutes, second class from ¥18. Bus 99 outside the station reaches the visitor centre in roughly 40 minutes for ¥10. Entry is ¥130, and the electric shuttle from the visitor centre to the formations is ¥25 on top — take it, because it covers several kilometres of exposed road before you have seen anything. Give the park three to four hours and enter as early as you can; the stone pillars give no shade by late morning.
Trains back to Kunming run through the afternoon, so leaving the park at four still gets you into the city for dinner. Book the Shilin leg and a room near Green Lake in the same session —

Getting in from the airport
Metro Line 6 starts under the terminal and runs to East Coach Station, where you change to Line 3 for the centre. The whole trip costs about ¥6 and takes roughly 45 minutes. Base yourself around Green Lake or Dongfeng Square and most of what you came for is walkable or one metro ride away.
Add the Western Hills on a clear morning rather than a hazy one. The Dragon Gate grottoes are ticketed separately at ¥30, with cable cars charged on top of that, and the cliff path narrows to the point where queues build on weekends.
