How many days in Lijiang? Two nights minimum, three is better

Two nights is the minimum, three is what most people wish they had booked, and four only if you are adding a gorge or a lake.

Lijiang splits into three jobs: the old town, the snow mountain, and the villages north of town. Each takes a day, and the mountain takes the whole of one.

NightsWhat fitsChoose it if
2Dayan old town, then a full Jade Dragon Snow Mountain dayYou have a fixed onward train and treat Lijiang as one stop on the Yunnan line
3The above plus Shuhe and Baisha, and slack for a clouded-out summitYou are travelling independently and want the mountain to be optional on any given day
4Add Tiger Leaping Gorge or Lashi LakeYou are not moving on immediately and can absorb a long day in a car

Two nights: town and mountain

Dayan, the main old town, sits at 2,400 m, so keep arrival day flat — walk the canals, climb Lion Hill for the roofscape, eat early. The RMB 50 maintenance fee is paid once and valid for 365 days; it covers Dayan with Black Dragon Pool, plus Baisha and Shuhe. Children under 12 or under 1.2 m, and anyone aged 60 or over, are exempt. Tour groups pay through the agency; independent travellers are asked for it at Black Dragon Pool rather than in the streets.

The mountain day

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is RMB 100 entry plus a RMB 20 eco-bus, with the Glacier Park cable car listed at RMB 120 in 2026. The cable car runs to 4,506 m and a boardwalk continues to 4,680 m. Two separate bookings are needed: entry through the 玉龙雪山服务 mini-program, cable-car seats through 丽江旅游集团, which releases the next seven days at 20:00 daily, with Spruce Meadow at 21:00. Buying entry does not hold a cable-car seat. Yak Meadow has been closed since 4 March 2026 for rebuilding, with 2028 given as an expected reopening year.

Why the third night earns its keep

Shuhe is 4 km north-west of Dayan, Baisha 8 km. Baisha has more than 40 temple murals; Shuhe has the quieter canals. Cloud is the real argument for the extra night — a socked-in summit is common, and a spare morning lets you swap days instead of writing the mountain off. Tiger Leaping Gorge is two hours' drive each way, and the government no-entry notice covers the High Trail and the undeveloped Middle Gorge: plan the developed viewing area, not the old two-day hike.

Getting there and sleeping

The fastest C-train from Kunming takes about 3h 29m; Dali is 1h 37m to 2h 22m away. Dayan is pedestrian-only and a wheeled case is painful on the cobblestones, so confirm your host can meet you at a road-access point.
