Kaifeng's Two Song Dynasty Theme Parks, Ranked by What's Inside
Two parks in Kaifeng rebuild the Northern Song capital at full scale, and both are stranger and more hands-on than the brochures suggest. Neither is a museum walk-through — you get pulled into the act.
- Qingming Riverside Garden (清明上河园) — The park is a working reconstruction of the scroll painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival, and the performances run all day rather than on a fixed schedule. Costumed staff lead dance routines, and visitors join in; one clip of the park's "Great Song Dance King" material has a 60-year-old woman from a village dance troupe holding her own in the choreography. Lotus leaves fill the water channels in summer. Come for the performances, not for a quiet walk — the crowds are the point.
- The pirate ship (海盗船) — Inside Qingming Riverside Garden there is a swing-boat ride, and it has become a running joke among visitors: the staff member dressed as captain looks greener than the passengers by the end. Standard amusement-park physics, with a crowd that films it.
- Wansui Mountain Wuxia City (万岁山武侠城) — The wuxia-themed companion park, built around martial-arts storylines rather than a single painting. The set pieces are lavish enough that regular visitors describe it as unrecognisable from its early years. Quieter in the morning, wall-to-wall in the evening.
- The "thunder fan" (雷霆大扇) — Wansui Mountain's summer cooling gimmick: oversized fans blasting misted air at visitors standing in the queues and squares. It has become the park's signature bit of over-service, and people queue for the queue. If you are going in July or August, this is the reason.
Both parks sit in the Longting district on the north side of the old city, close enough to each other that a single overnight covers them.
