Where to stay in Beijing: match the base to your trip
There is no single best area to stay in Beijing. The city is built on ring roads, and "central" filters out almost nothing: two hotels in the same district can still be 40 minutes apart by metro. Pick the base that matches your itinerary, then check one detail above the rest — that the walk from your door to a metro entrance is 5–10 minutes, not "near on the map".
Four bases, and who each one suits

Wangfujing and the rest of Dongcheng are the standard first-trip answer. Mid-range rooms run ¥600–1,200 a night, budget chains start around ¥350, and five-star properties go past ¥2,000.
Qianmen and Dashilan sit south of Tiananmen Square. Rates are usually ¥400–800 for a comparable room, and the lanes behind the restored main street have more character. It is louder at night, and the hutongs off the pedestrian street are easy to get lost in.
Gulou and Shichahai are the atmospheric choice: converted courtyard hotels, the lakes, and slow mornings. Shichahai station on Line 8 is about a 10-minute walk from most hutong hotels, and cars cannot always reach the door.
Sanlitun and Guomao in Chaoyang suit nightlife and business travel. Guomao station sits at the intersection of Line 1 and Line 10. Business-hotel rates here can run 30–40% below Tuesday prices at the weekend.
Arriving from the airport
Beijing's two airports feed different halves of the city. From Capital (PEK), the Capital Airport Express runs from Terminals 2 and 3 to Dongzhimen for ¥25 in about 25 minutes, where you change to Metro Lines 2 and 13; the last train from Dongzhimen leaves around 22:30. From Daxing (PKX), the Daxing Airport Express reaches Caoqiao in 19 minutes for ¥35, with the transfer to Line 10 or Line 19 inside the station. Caoqiao is on the south side, so northern districts need one more change.
Passports and check-in
In 2024 the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Commerce and the National Immigration Administration told hotels they may not refuse foreign guests for lacking a foreign-related qualification. Registration is the hotel's job: your passport is checked at the desk and the stay is reported to the local police within 24 hours. Smaller guesthouses still get this wrong, so filter for properties that accept foreign passports and carry the passport with you.
