Where to stay in Chengdu: four bases, one metro rule

For a first trip of two to five nights, stay in Jinjiang District, within walking distance of Chunxi Road station on Metro Lines 2 and 3. That is the default, and it is right for most people. Three other bases beat it for specific trips.

Why Line 3 settles it

Line 3 is the practical argument for Chunxi Road. It runs to Panda Avenue station, where Shuttle Bus 408 leaves from Exit A for the panda base's south gate; from Zoo station you can take bus 655 or 87 instead. Panda visits start early, and this is one metro ride with no transfer. Line 3 crosses Line 2 at Chunxi Road, and Taikoo Li and the IFS mall connect to that station directly.

You pay for the convenience. Check the exact entrance on the map before booking: plenty of hotels carry "Chunxi Road" in the name and still sit a long walk from the station exit.

Arriving at Tianfu airport

Metro Line 18 runs from Tianfu International Airport into the city. The local service takes about 50 minutes for ¥10; the express takes 35 to 40 minutes but runs roughly once an hour. If you land late, check the day's timetable rather than assuming a train — and if you are leaving on a very early flight, price a taxi.

On 240-hour visa-free transit, both Chengdu Shuangliu and Tianfu airports are eligible ports of entry, and travellers from the 54 qualifying countries may move within 11 Sichuan cities, Chengdu, Leshan and Ya'an among them. You still need a confirmed onward ticket to a third country.

Rates here swing hard around weekends and public holidays, and the same room is often priced differently on each platform, so it is worth comparing the main booking sites before you commit.
