Where to stay in Chongqing: Jiefangbei, Guanyinqiao or Nanbin Road
For a first trip of two or three nights, stay in Jiefangbei, on the Yuzhong peninsula. Hongya Cave is roughly a 10-minute walk away, and three stations serve the district: Linjiangmen (Line 2), Jiaochangkou (Lines 1 and 2) and Xiaoshizi (Lines 1 and 6). Choose Guanyinqiao instead if food and ordinary city life matter more than sightseeing, or Nanbin Road if you want the skyline filling your window.
| District | Best for | Transport | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jiefangbei (Yuzhong) | First visits, short trips, walking to Hongya Cave, the Yangtze cableway and Chaotianmen for river cruises | Linjiangmen (Line 2), Jiaochangkou (Lines 1/2), Xiaoshizi (Lines 1/6) | Central means crowded, noisy and pricier. Budget guesthouses here often look worse than their photos |
| Guanyinqiao (Jiangbei) | Food, shopping, longer stays, awkward early flights or trains | Line 3 and Line 9; Line 3 reaches the airport in about 25 minutes | The river is a real barrier — Yuzhong's sights need a metro ride or a taxi, not a walk |
| Nanbin Road and Danzishi (Nan'an) | Skyline and river views, quieter evenings, couples and repeat visitors | Line 6 near Shangxinjie and Longmenhao; the Danzishi stretch sits about 1 km from its nearest station | You are across the water from everything you came to see, not inside it |
Check the last 100 metres, not the address
Chongqing is built in layers, so a hotel's postal address says nothing about which street level the door is on. A property can be on a different tier of the city than the map suggests, and arriving with luggage on the wrong one means climbing or descending several storeys to find reception. Two habits fix this: note which metro exit the hotel names in its listing, and search guest reviews for "stairs", "slope" and "luggage". If you are travelling with children or anyone unsteady on their feet, only shortlist hotels that describe a flat route from station to lobby.
Fares and rooms
Chongqing's metro prices by distance: ¥2 for the first 4 km, ¥7 for 23–30 km, topping out at ¥11 across the whole network, under a tariff that took effect on 30 July 2025. From Jiangbei Airport, Line 10 reaches Hongtudi in about 30 minutes for ¥7, then Line 6 continues to Jiefangbei — allow 45 minutes to an hour with luggage. Budget rooms around Guanyinqiao commonly go for ¥150–400, while river-view rooms on the south bank run from about ¥300 to ¥2000.
River-view listings are the ones worth double-checking: "river view" can mean a full panorama or a sliver past the building next door, so look at recent guest photos rather than the marketing shots.
