Where to stay in Lijiang: Dayan, Shuhe or Baisha
Sleep in Shuhe unless you have a reason not to: same Naxi architecture as the famous old town, quieter nights, lower rates, and it is 4 km from the crowds. Choose Dayan if you want to be out on the canals at 7am before the coaches arrive. Choose Baisha only if you accept a taxi every time you want dinner.
Lijiang's UNESCO listing covers three separate towns on one plain at about 2,400 m — Dayan (what everyone calls "Lijiang Old Town"), Shuhe and Baisha — plus Black Dragon Pool at Dayan's north end. Hotels in the modern city around them are a fourth, much blander option.
| Area | Distance from Dayan | What it feels like | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dayan 大研 | — | Canals, lanterns, bars, tour flags from mid-morning; stone lanes, no vehicles | First-timers, one or two nights, photographers at dawn |
| Shuhe 束河 | 4 km north-west | Smaller Tea Horse Road town; canals, cafés, near-silent after dark | Most travellers, families, light sleepers, longer stays |
| Baisha 白沙 | 8 km north | A working village under Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; murals, workshops, no bar scene | Culture-first trips of two nights or more |
| Lijiang city | 20–30 minute walk or a CNY 15–25 taxi | Ordinary mid-sized Chinese city; car to the door, lifts, chain hotels | Accessibility needs, business, a late arrival |
Book the lane, not just the town
Inside Dayan the street matters more than the property. Xinyi Street is the bar strip and stays loud late; Wuyi Street is the busiest shopping stretch; the lanes climbing towards Wangu Tower and the northern residential alleys are quiet but involve steps. Courtyard rooms in the old-town area run from roughly CNY 80 a night to about CNY 500 for the best-designed ones.

Small family guesthouses are not listed everywhere and the same room can carry very different prices, so compare the main booking sites before you commit.
Nobody pays at a gate, but you pay once
Since 1 August 2025 each visitor pays CNY 50 one time, valid 365 days, covering Dayan, Black Dragon Pool, Shuhe and Baisha. Children under 12 or under 1.2 m, people aged 60 and over, and people with disabilities are among those exempt; tour groups pay through the agency. Independent travellers have not generally been stopped in the lanes, but Black Dragon Pool asks for the receipt.
Cars cannot reach the door in Dayan
No taxi or Didi enters the old town. Luggage comes in by hand or on a guesthouse trolley, over polished cobbles that are hard on wheels. Message the property before booking, especially if you land at night, and confirm they will meet you at the south gate or the big waterwheels.
Getting in from the airport
Lijiang Sanyi (LJG) is about 28 km south. A taxi or Didi to Dayan costs roughly CNY 100–120 and takes 35–45 minutes; the airport shuttle is about CNY 20 to the new town. Shuhe and Baisha add time on top of that.
You are at 2,400 m, and the cable car up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reaches 4,506 m. Keep the first day short, drink more than you think you need, and do not book a mountain day for the morning after you land.

How many days in Lhasa? Four, and here's what each covers
Four days is the number that works: one to arrive, two for the Potala, Jokhang and monasteries, one to leave. Three is the floor, six only if you're heading out to the lakes.

Two areas cover almost every Lhasa stay, but your agency books the room — here is what to ask for, and what oxygen actually means at 3,650 m.
