Where to stay in Shanghai: Jing'an vs the Bund vs Lujiazui
Stay in Jing'an if you want one base that works for everything. Stay around People's Square and East Nanjing Road if this is your first trip and you want the Bund on foot. Choose the Former French Concession for cafés and tree-lined streets, and book Lujiazui only if the skyline view is the reason you came.

Two things decide most bookings. First, luggage: Metro Line 2 runs from Pudong airport to People's Square in about an hour for around ¥7, and it also serves Lujiazui and Jing'an Temple — a hotel on Line 2 saves you a change with bags. Second, evenings: the Bund and Nanjing Road are the loudest and most expensive places to sleep, while Jing'an and the Xujiahui area carry the widest spread of mid-range rooms. Anyone flying into Hongqiao is better off in Jing'an than on the Bund; it is the shorter run.
