12 Xi'an Street Foods Worth the Queue
These are the shops Xi'an locals queue for — carb-heavy, cheap, and mostly unchanged for decades. A regular's list, not a tourist one.
(Lao Liujia Paomo) — the benchmark for paomo, the torn-bread-and-lamb soup that defines the city. You tear the bread yourself; the smaller the pieces, the better the result.
(Mafeng Suantang Shuijiao) — dumplings in a sour, faintly peppery broth. The vinegar does the work here, and it cuts through a day of heavy eating.
(Ziwu Road Zhangji Roujiamo, Cuihua Road branch) — Xi'an's most famous roujiamo, and the one every other stall gets compared to. Shredded braised pork in a crisp flatbread; worth the wait, though the queue is real.
(Xing Laosan Rouwan Hulatang) — a breakfast hulatang built around pork meatballs rather than the more common strips of beef. Thick, peppery, and best before 9am.
(Liuji Lazhi Rou Qiumianpian) — torn noodles with the same cured braising sauce used in roujiamo. Order it with the meat, not without.
(Lao Xi'an Hanji Sanxian Zhumo) — the "three fresh" version of paomo, boiled rather than soaked, so the broth stays clear. A lighter alternative if you have already had the lamb version.
(Chengcheng Chongbin Shuipan Yangrou, Houzhaimen branch) — Chengcheng-style lamb in a basin, from the county north of Xi'an that claims to do it best. Comes with a flatbread; the broth is the point.
(Mabin Xiaochao Paomo) — paomo fried rather than souped, with more oil, chilli and wok heat. This is the version people who find regular paomo bland graduate to.
(Fangling Youpo Mian) — wide noodles with chilli and garlic hit with smoking oil at the table. Simple, and one of the cheapest full meals on this list.
(San Xiongdi Gaolu Shaobing) — blast-furnace baked flatbread, sesame-crusted and hollow. Buy two; one never survives the walk back.
(Yangpo Hongyou Mixian) — rice noodles in chilli oil, a Xi'an breakfast staple that barely exists outside the city. Fast, cheap, and best eaten standing.
(Mabo Karou) — the late-night stop. Skewers over charcoal, cumindusted, ordered in tens. This is where an evening ends.
Where to stay
Most of these cluster inside the city wall near the Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter, so staying in Beilin district keeps the eating walkable.
