Yanjiang West Road: 7 Photo Spots on Guangzhou's Riverside Nightwalk
Yanjiang West Road runs along the Pearl River past a stretch of colonial-era banks, domes and arcades, and after dark it becomes the closest thing Guangzhou has to a European riverfront — which is why people walk it from 7pm onwards with a camera.
- Dajitou Bus Terminal (大基头公交总站) — Start here. It sits on the opposite bank from Yanjiang West Road, and almost nobody photographs from it, so you can line up the Customs House, Postal Museum and Southern Building in one frame without waiting for a gap in the crowd.
- Renmin Bridge (人民桥) — The bridge's European-style dome is the reason to climb it, but the real payoff is the view down onto both banks of the river. Go up for the elevation, not the architecture alone.
- Customs House (粤海关) — The classic one: colonial stonework, a European dome, a clock tower. The spot across the road is the famous one and it gets busy, so expect to hunt for an angle. The exterior is under maintenance and won't be finished soon — check before you build a trip around it.
- Postal Museum (邮政博物馆) — Quieter than the Customs House and full of period detail: old stonework, vintage fittings, the kind of building where the small stuff rewards a longer lens. It sits right on the waterfront stretch.
- Southern Building (南方大厦) — Its shape is unlike anything else on the road, and at night the lighting gives it a distinctly old-Guangzhou mood. Shoot it from the opposite side of the street rather than from underneath.
- Xinhua Hotel Overpass (新华大酒店天桥) — The one people come for. Iron railings frame the arcade street behind, and standing on it is the reliable way to get that retro look in a single frame.
- Aiqun Building (爱裙大厦) — Arcade frontage fused with a taller Western-style tower block. Photograph it and you could be on a European street; the giveaway is everything around it.
The walk opens with the blue hour around 7pm — that's the window worth planning around, and the moment the streetlights come on against a still-lit sky.
One extra not on the seven-spot list: West Dike Wharf (西堤码头) is a boarding point for Pearl River night cruises, and the last boat leaves at 21:00. Shooting the lit-up banks from the deck is a different picture from anything you get on foot.
If you want to stay within walking distance of the riverfront rather than crossing town afterwards, the hotels nearest the road fill up on summer weekends —
