The Best Xiaolongbao in Shanghai (Local Verdict)

Xiaolongbao — the soup-filled Shanghai dumpling — is the city''s defining dish. Every guidebook will send you to Din Tai Fung. Every Shanghai local will tell you that''s a rookie mistake.

Here''s the actual ranking, based on 100,000+ Dianping reviews and our own taste tests.

1. Jia Jia Tang Bao (佳家汤包)

Tiny hole-in-the-wall on Huanghe Road. The crab roe xiaolongbao here is what locals dream about. The line gets brutal — go before 11 AM or after 2 PM.

Price: ¥30-50/person. Worth it: absolutely.

2. Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant (南翔馒头店)

The original — operating since 1900 in Yu Garden. Touristy, but historically the birthplace of xiaolongbao. Skip the takeaway line on the ground floor and go directly to the 2nd floor for the sit-down experience.

Price: ¥60-80/person on 2nd floor.

3. Yang''s Fried Dumpling (小杨生煎)

Technically shengjianbao (pan-fried, not steamed) — different but related. Still an essential Shanghai dumpling experience. Crispy bottom, soup inside.

Price: ¥20-30/person. The cheapest must-try in Shanghai.

4. Lin Long Fang (林龙坊)

A French Concession favorite. More refined than Jia Jia, less famous than Nanxiang. Locals love the consistency.

5. Din Tai Fung

Yes, it''s good. Yes, it''s reliable. But you can eat Din Tai Fung in Singapore, LA, or Tokyo. Save it for when you''re not in Shanghai.

How to eat xiaolongbao properly

  1. Lift it gently with chopsticks by the top knot.
  2. Place it on your spoon.
  3. Bite a small hole in the side and let the soup pool in the spoon.
  4. Drink the soup, then eat the dumpling.
  5. Use the vinegar + ginger sauce.

Don''t bite the whole thing at once — the soup is boiling and you will burn your mouth. Every Shanghai local has done this once. Don''t be the foreigner who does it twice.
