Fook Luk House Shanghai: Upscale Cantonese Without the Price Tag

Fook Luk House (福禄居) promises upscale Cantonese dining at surprisingly reasonable prices, and it largely delivers. This modern Cantonese chain has turned Shanghai's notion of expensive restaurant ambiance on its head, offering a sophisticated atmosphere with an average spend around ¥238 per person instead of the ¥500+ you'd expect elsewhere.

What to Expect

The restaurant channels Hong Kong's 1970s tea house style with red and gold interiors, traditional Chinese paintings, and comfortable booth seating. The highlight is their dim sum selection—think fresh shrimp har gow, innovative bird's nest egg tarts, and their signature honey-glazed char siu. The roasted meats shine here: the char siu has perfectly caramelized edges while staying tender inside, and their glass-skin roasted pigeon arrives with crackling skin that's worth the Instagram moment.

How to Get There

Fook Luk House has three Shanghai locations, with the flagship at 268 Xujiahui Road, 3rd Floor, LuOne mall in Huangpu District. The nearest metro station is Madang Road (Line 9), about 5 minutes' walk. You'll also find branches at Kerry Parkside in Pudong and HKRI Taikoo Hui in Jing'an District.

Operating hours are daily from 11am-2:30pm and 5-9:30pm. The lunch dim sum service typically offers better value than dinner, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon meal. Reservations aren't essential for lunch but recommended for dinner, especially on weekends.

While the "wealthy canteen" promise from social media might be overstated, Fook Luk House does offer genuine quality at fair prices. It's particularly strong for groups wanting to sample classic Cantonese flavors without committing to a banquet-level budget. The service runs smoothly and the food consistently hits the mark, even if it doesn't quite reach the heights of Shanghai's premium Cantonese establishments.
